Land Conservation Workshop

A workshop on the conservation of family-owned farms and forests was held at Ashford’s Knowlton Hall on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. The information session included presentations by professionals from related fields and local landowners.

Steve Broderick, Forester and Program Director at Goodwin Forest, opened the workshop with a presentation about the options and rights available to land owners looking to protect their land from future development.  Attorney and CPA William Dakin followed with a discussion about the myriad of tax implications related to land conservation. Warren Church, the President of Joshua’s Trust, a local land trust, spoke of the role that land trusts play in conservation efforts, as well as his family’s decision to donate land to the Trust.  Wayne and Marcia Kilpatrick of Hampton shared their recent experience of becoming easement donors.   The workshop concluded with a presentation by Holly Drinkuth of The Nature Conservancy about the various state and federal funding programs that are available to land owners interested in land conservation.

This free informational workshop was co-sponsored by the Goodwin Forest Conservation Education Center, Joshua’s Tract Conservation Land Trust, Green Valley Institute, The Nature Conservancy, and the Conservation Commissions of Ashford, Chaplin, Eastford, Hampton and Willington.

For further information about the workshop or land conservation, contact Peter Andersen, Chair of the Willington Conservation Commission, or any of the agencies listed above.
