The purpose of the Conservation Commission is to protect the town's natural resources and maintain and improve environmental quality. By statute, the commission is responsible for the development, conservation, supervision and regulation of natural resources in the Town of Willington. The commission's duties include keeping an index of all open areas, including open marshlands, swamps and other wetlands, within the town and conducting research into the use and possible use or proposed use of open areas.
Promotion of conservation of natural resources is a high priority. The Conservation Commission has also been given by the town responsibility for managing the Fenton-Ruby Park and Wildlife Preserve and the Talmadge Tract.
· Participate in determining the utilization of the Town’s land areas through research, inventorying natural resources and making recommendations to Town officials and regulatory agencies
· Manage Town parks and monitor protected open spaces including the Fenton-Ruby Park & Wildlife Preserve and Drobney Sanctuary and the Talmadge Tract
· Provide educational opportunities for citizens to participate in the preservation and enjoyment of the natural environment
· Cooperate with regional groups in conservation planning and grant acquisition
· Actively seek opportunities for the preservation of additional open space
